All 50 States have “Move Over” laws to protect law enforcement officers and other workers stopped on our nation’s roads. … In Georgia, this law requires motorists to: Move over to the next lane if safely possible. If unable to move over, then slow down below the speed limit and be prepared to stop. We suggest slowing down at least 20 mph below the speed limit.
Why do we take this so seriously? Because every year public safety, tow truck drivers and highway workers are killed and injured by drivers failing to obey the move over law.
One of our own deputies had an extremely close call last night. After pulling off Ga 365 to check on a stranded motorist, another vehicle struck the drivers door of his patrol car as he began to exit. Luckily he wasn’t injured and the only damage was to the other vehicles side mirror.
A sandy Springs PD officer is in the hospital today because of another incident last night where a driver, this time impaired, failed to move over and struck his patrol car causing injury to the officer. These close calls happen way to often.
We don’t give warnings on move over violations. Pay attention, move over, and slow down.
